Mercy Family Birthing Unit provides further support after going home through the Mercy Support Centre for Parents and Babies.

The aim of the Support Centre is to extend quality, optimum care to both parents and babies, by experienced Midwives and Lactation Midwife.

Support Centre Aims

• To support and advise women in breast-feeding management, mothercraft techniques and settling techniques

• To supervise breast-feeding - observing position,technique and to offer advice regarding breast-feeding

• To assist with unsettled infants

• To advise with regard to reflux and colic problems

• To offer post-natal distress support

• To refer you to the appropriate health professionals for further treatment as necessary

• To ensure correct consistent advice is given

• To provide valuable reference resources:Videos, books,pamphlets.

This is a FREE parenting advisory service for all women who have their babies at Mercy Family Birthing Unit for up to eight weeks post-delivery.

For a nominal fee the service of the Lacation Midwife is also available for mother's who deliver elsewhere for up to eight weeks post- delivery.

Open Monday to Thursday 8.00am - 3.30pm.

Planning for babies and toddlers occurs through relationship-based experiences and interactions. The emphasis is to promote and maintain a secure attachment between a child and their primary caregiver (see primary caregiving), then with the wider environment. Relationship-based programming recognises that children need to feel safe and secure in a predictable and responsive environment. Programs are dynamic and responsive to individual children's interests and intrinsically motivated purposes, taking into consideration a child's emerging sense of autonomy, agency, identity and belonging and opportunities to experience interdependence and independence.

Staff and families work in partnership to offer children potential pathways that are individually relevant and challenging. Various lenses are used to achieve a programming cycle of noticing a child's pusuits, behaviours and communication and striving to understand them in the context of the environment. Staff then plan to offer children opportunities to extend or repeat their learning and revisit past experiences. These lenses revolve around children's secure attachment and patterns of relationship and connection, their wellbeing and involvement in the environment and their primary caregiver's ability to be emotionally available to children as individuals.

Premature babies study

A protein free artificial surfactant (artificial lung expanding compound; ALEC) composed of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylglycerol was assessed for its effect on the main complications of prematurity in a prospective two stage randomised trial of 328 unselected babies delivered at between 25 and 29 weeks of gestation. Babies were randomised to receive approximately 100 mg artificial surfactant suspension or 1 ml saline. This was given at birth into the pharynx with up to three more endotracheal doses if the baby was intubated during the first day. Treatment with artificial surfactant reduced the neonatal mortality from 27% to 14%, the incidence of parenchymal brain haemorrhages from 24% to 16%, and the severity of the respiratory distress syndrome. In the first 10 days babies treated with artificial surfactant who survived averaged 19 hours less in greater than 30% oxygen, 20 hours less ventilation, and 17 hours less supplemental oxygen. Artificial surfactant had no effect on the incidence of pneumothoraces, pulmonary interstitial emphysema, patent ductus arteriosus, or postnatal infections and no serious side effects. Artificial surfactant (ALEC) given to very premature babies at birth significantly reduces their mortality and the respiratory support needed and should prove a valuable addition to treatment.

Up to 100 babies may have died needlessly after undergoing complex heart surgery at Bristol Royal Infirmary, it has been claimed.

Harry Trusted, a representative of the Bristol Heart Children's Action Group, said detailed statistical evidence showed dozens of children may have survived if they had been treated elsewhere. Mr Trusted was giving evidence to the public inquiry into high deaths among children who underwent cardiac surgery at the hospital.

He said: "We will never know exactly how many children died at Bristol because of mismanagement and bad care.

"We think with confidence the figure is probably between 50 and 100 and in our submission that in itself is justification for this inquiry.

"The events this inquiry is looking into may properly be described as a tragedy."

Bristol surgeon loses High Court bid

A High Court bid by a surgeon at the centre of the Bristol heart babies scandal to force the Health Secretary to hear an appeal has failed.

Mr Janardan Dhasmana had hoped to save his career by launching a successful appeal bid.

His lawyer told the court that the surgeon felt he had been made a scapegoat following the outcry over the deaths of babies and children who underwent complex heart surgery at Bristol Royal Infirmary.

OCC Clinics in London and Manchester

At the OCC Clinics in London and Manchester babies and children are treated for such diverse conditions as asthma, cerebral palsy, Down's syndrome, eczema, epilepsy and sleeplessness, as well as more common childhood ailments like glue ear and colic.

Our team of 'flying osteopaths' treats babies at the neo-natal care unit of a London hospital, and we also care for pregnant women and their unborn children. Each year we provide over 30,000 treatments.

We are also committed to raising awareness amongst both the general public and health care professionals as to the benefits of osteopathy to children, and to the post-graduate training of osteopaths in paediatric osteopathy.

The Osteopathic Centre for Children is a charity that was set up by Patricia Ferrall and Stuart Korth in January 1991, with a Saturday morning clinic at the Royal Homeopathic Hospital, Queens Square, London WC1, around the corner from the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children, where the OCC rented a room. The original clinic was staffed by volunteer osteopaths.

The OCC receives no statuary funding, and all funds are raised through charitable donations, including those made by parents who bring their children to the clinics. At present, the charity is providing around 30,000 treatments a year in its clinics in London and Manchester, while also providing a paediatric osteopathy service to the neonatal intensive care unit at Barnet General Hospital, in London.

Philips Baby Climate Centre Review

8 July 2006 - The Philips SCH580 Baby Climate Centre promises to help improve the air quality in your room by adding moisture to the air and protect little ones from irritation, dry and itchy skin, chapped lips and dry, sore throats.

The system works by pumping cool air in the room, which is created by the unit by firing ultrasonic waves at the water to make it evaporate.

For the hardcore techies out there this is done by using an ultrasonic frequency oscillator to break up the water into tiny particles. The ventilation system then blows out these water particles (mist) into the dry air where they evaporate to give the required humidity. At full rate, the unit actually pumps out 250ml of water per hour.

Doing it this way, Philips ensure that you aren't adding additional heat to the room that you're humidifying as well as being able to achieve an almost silent operation. In addition you won't be steaming up the windows, walls or furniture either.

Set-up is simple and simply requires you to fill the unit's reservoir with water and turn the unit on. To compensate for varying humidity levels, the unit can be adjusted to pump out mist at varying degrees and you can even change the direction of the mist output rather than having to move the humidifier itself.

Finally for tired mums and dads there is an automatic switch off sensor so when you run out of water the unit isn't just oscillating thin air for hours before you wake up.

According to Philips, when the relative humidity level of your baby's room is below the comfortable zone of 40-60% the humidifier should be switched on. So you know when this is, Philips has bundled a simple hygrometer and thermometer in the box, however until you buy the unit you won't know if you need it or not.

In fact so far in our tests every room in our house as been within the "comfortable zone" suggesting that its £60 not well spent.

That said, in a closed room the Baby Climate Centre does make a difference to the humidity when turned on as we soon managed to raise the humidity of a room by 10% within a couple of hours.

Before you rush out and buy every gadget under the sun for you kids, we would recommend investing in a hygrometer first so see if you really need one. In our home it appears we don't.

If you do, then this will get the job done, is easy to use and requires minimal thought.

Led by Institute Director, Professor Bryan Williams, scientists working in the Centre for Cancer Research are dedicated to studying the impact of cancer incidence, in an effort to learn more about the growth and development of different cancers and to discover new cancer therapies.

Founding director, Bill Handel, started his practice of surrogacy in 1980, through the Law Offices of William Handel. In 1986, the Center for Surrogate Parenting, Inc., was incorporated. Bill Handel and Karen Synesiou are the co-directors and co-owners of CSP. In our over 23 years of helping infertile couples become parents, we have celebrated the birth of over 979 babies.

We believe that surrogate parenting should be a collaboration of professionals who guide the entire process. The team should consist of doctors, psychologists or psychotherapists, attorneys and an agency that is the liaison between all the participants. CSP has created a "team" that is unsurpassed anywhere in the world. CSP is unique because we have created a team that is involved with each surrogacy arrangement from beginning to end. Your counselor is by your side from the moment you enter our program and continues to offer you support, companionship and guidance long after your delivery. She is very intimate with the details of your relationship with your couple, husband and children and is not called to help out only when there is a need. You do not have to explain your situation before receiving help, she already understands the dynamics. With other programs a counselor is usually only contracted to screen you and thereafter only when a "situation" arises.

Once you are accepted into our program, we immediately begin the screening process. We do not wait for you to meet a couple. At CSP we complete our psychological and medical screening before you choose a couple. We know through experience that once a surrogate mother and a couple meet, the bonding process and friendship begins immediately. We also know that if a surrogate mother does not complete the psychological or medical screening process, all parties incur a lot of heartache. Therefore, we prescreen our surrogate mothers. When you choose a couple you are absolutely confident that you can help them and won't let them down. We believe in this so much that CSP actually incurs these costs! No other program prescreens their surrogate mothers. CSP invests our time and money on you as a sign of our confidence in you.

It will take you approximately three months to get through our screening process. Of course, we could rush you through, but experience has taught us that we need to move at the pace you set. We allow our surrogate mothers to meet a counselor and attend group support meetings before committing to a couple. The counselor will discuss with you the impact your pregnancy will have on your husband, children, extended family and friends. At group support meeting you will meet other surrogate mothers at various stages in our program. One lady may be meeting her couple, another recently pregnant, another may have delivered, and so on. Attending group will allow you to learn first hand what it takes to be involved in surrogate parenting. Once you have met a counselor and attended group meeting you will truly understand the journey you are about to embark upon. The next step is to undergo a full medical screening and before you know it you will be choosing a couple!

Today, surrogacy and egg donation remain unregulated in almost every State. This means that anyone can start their own egg donation or surrogacy program. Each agency can set its own standards and rules, and therefore it is imperative that surrogate mothers should thoroughly investigate their choices, work with an agency that can offer experience, who works with skilled professionals and has a good reputation. CSP has been guiding surrogate mothers for over 23 years, we must be doing it right! Our main goal is to ensure that our surrogate mothers and their families take no financial risks. We ensure that couples deposit all anticipated trust funds into an account PRIOR to any medical procedure taking place. The reason we insist on this is to ensure that we always have sufficient funds to pay for your medical bills and expenses. Life events happen and could impact your couple's ability to deposit funds at a later time. For example, they could be injured and unable to authorize the payments, could be sued and have their accounts frozen, get divorced and cannot agree on who is to pay what amount, etc. Our priority is our surrogate mothers and to this end we will not take any financial risks that could affect her. Many programs allow couples to deposit funds as the pregnancy develops. In such cases it is the surrogate mother that takes the financial risks if her couple will not or cannot deposit the necessary funds. Of course, the contract everyone signs provides that the Intended Parents are responsible for all expenses. However it could take years and substantial attorney fees to recoup your fees. CSP would never allow a surrogate mother to take a financial risk with her family.

Approximately 12 percent of child abuse-related deaths occur as a result of SBS. Roughly 25 percent of SBS victims die, with another 35 percent suffering long-term disabilities; 41 percent are under the age of 1.8 The cost of caring for a surviving SBS child during his or her lifetime is often exorbitant. Initial hospitalization for SBS victims is estimated at $75,000 to $95,000.9 Additional costs are incurred for rehabilitation, or medical expenses and special education needs. Perhaps the most insidious side of SBS is seen in the thousands of children who suffer severe physical and mental disabilities throughout their lifetime.

The National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome is the foremost national and international SBS information clearinghouse. It is leading a massive national and international awareness program at hospitals, schools, community centers and emergency rooms. Poster campaigns now depict macho males holding their tiny babies stating, "Tough guys don't shake." Pamphlets appear in hospitals and pediatricians' offices explaining the danger of shaking and tossing babies, and films for parents and childcare professionals exist. The organization has also sponsored numerous large conferences, including one in Australia and most recently in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Raising awareness about the potential injury to a child in a classroom setting has been shown to decrease the incidence of SBS.10 "By explaining the damage caused and how many infants fall victim to [SBS], we can reduce the number of cases. Oftentimes, people don't realize how easy it is to hurt an infant," said John Baldwin, senior instructor at Marana Community Correctional Treatment Facility in Arizona. "With this class, inmates receive graphic and vivid lessons on the impact of shaking an infant and really think twice about how to handle a baby."

How to Read to your babies

First, be comfortable, cosy and relaxed - both of you. On the other hand, hearing a story can be very calming for a child who is in 'one of those moods'.

Next, make sure your child can see the book the right way up as you read.

For babies and toddlers up to 2 years

point at pictures and say or ask names of things (depending on age)
use a slow sing-song voice
use different voices for different characters - be entertaining
spend time talking about the pictures before turning the page
say a name and ask your older baby or toddler to point to the item
give huge praise each time your child points at and names an object

For 2-4 year-olds

give your child time to look at the pictures before you read
ask, 'Where's the...?' 'What's that called?' 'What's she doing?'
always follow text with your finger as you read
with familiar stories, see if your child can join in or finish phrases
ask questions like: 'Why did he do that?' 'What happens next?'
discuss things you both liked/didn't like and why

For 4 year-olds and over (and possibly some 3 year-olds)

as for 2-4 year olds
ask your child if he can remember the order of events in the story
try paired reading (sometimes called shared reading)

Special activity
If you think your child may be ready for a real reading activity, try this: choose a word which appears several times (such as a name) show it to your child and tell him what it says: can your child find the same word again?

Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) is the collection of signs and symptoms resulting from the violent shaking of an infant or small child. It is a form of child abuse. In America every year an estimated 1,200 - 1,400 children are shaken for whom treatment is sought. Of these tiny victims, 25 -30% die as a result of their injuries. The rest will have lifelong complications. It is likely that many more babies suffer from the effects of SBS yet no one knows because SBS victims rarely have any external evidence of trauma.

The Baby Therapy Centre is an early intervention service, which helps all babies and toddlers with an impairment or development delay to expand their competence. Families of these babies are assisted to cope with the enormous burden they face.

Why Sperm Freezing

When you are going for Cancer Therapies : Cancer therapies such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiation can cause permanent sterility and infertility. Having your sperm frozen can preserve future fertility.

When you are considering a Vasectomy : Sperm cryopreservation can preserve fertility and prevent the need for reversal surgery if personal circumstances change.

When involved in the process of ART like IUI, IVF, ICSI, GIFT : Sperm is to be stored for use with IUI, IVF, ICSI, GIFT, and other similar procedures so that it is available at a critical time.

When you are working in some hazardous environment : High risk professions with exposure to chemicals, radiation, extreme heat, etc. can cause sterility in men, so one can freeze their sperm.

When facing Ejaculatory dysfunction: It is thought that sperm number and quality decreases over time when ejaculation doesn't occur. Therefore, in cases where men can't ejaculate, such as with spinal cord injury, preserving sperm as early as possible may increase their fertility chances.

When Low sperm counts problem is with you : Higher-quality sperm samples can be frozen for later use with IVF and ICSI. Specimens can be pooled to increase the likelihood of achieving pregnancy.

When male partner are going to be absent : Sperm freezing enables the female partner to continue with her reproductive schedule.

Semen Analysis

Once semen is collected, semen samples are analysed for volume, viscosity and pH levels, and microscopically evaluated to determine motility, sperm count, morphology and other important factors.

Semen Cryopreservation

Cryoprotectant is added to the semen to control sperm damage caused by freezing. The specimen is then divided into individual cryo-vials, placed into liquid nitrogen vapor for 30 minutes, and then plunged into liquid nitrogen. At a temperature of -196°C all metabolic activity is halted. Semen can thus be preserved for many years.

Surgical sperm Retrival (PESA/MESA & TESA)

Patients with obstructive azoospermia (nil sperm) are offered surgical sperm recovery combined with IVF/ICSI to give a hope against hope to patients with nil sperm in the semen.

Sperm Washing

On popular demand, we have introduced the facility of Sperm washing / enhancement for outside patients also. All gynaecologist are welcome to avail this unique facility to procure washed / prepared sperms for performing IUI at their own clinics.
